# Ah...Picture Days

Picture Day is a big deal in our house. Everyone needs to look their best. If you showed up a few minutes before leaving for school you might think we were going to wedding. Everyone puts on their best shirt and brushes their hair. They walk out the front door and hope that picture time will be at the beginning of the day! 

I love pictures! When we have opportunity to look back at photos they give us a tangible reminder of who we were, what life looked like. They remind us of our innocence, even of those hopes and dreams that filled our hearts and minds. 

But a picture day can’t instil the things we hope we can look back and see; the intangibles that we so desperately need help to grow into in these picture day years.

When my boys run out the door for picture day during these first couple weeks of school I take the opportunity to remind myself of the real things I want imprinted on their hearts and minds.

Here is a simple list in no particular order, of attributes that I pray over my sons as they begin their year:

- Genuineness - I pray that they will be who they are, not who they think that they need to be. I know that they will thrive when they are living out who God has created them to be.
- Honesty - I pray that they would live out their words, dedicating themselves to radical truth not only to their friends and family, but to themselves and to God.
- Patience - I pray that they would take the time to slow down, reflect and consider the beauty and gravity of their humanness as God has created them. Patience is key to understanding "the why" in the hearts and minds of those around them as well as their own.
- Service - I pray that they would consider others and their needs, taking time to reflect on what is before them and how they may be able to live out their faith in practical and real ways for God's glory and the benefit of those around them.
- Trust - I pray my boys would develop a strong and unwavering belief in the passion and grace of God - a trust that is unshakeable that demonstrates itself in the way they act, speak and think.

I pray also that my boys and their classmates would live out a faith and dependance in their Heavenly Father, striving to live from the perspective of eternity rather than their temporal wants and perceived needs, evidencing their passion for holiness, and a dedication to complete submission to the risen saviour Jesus Christ who bore their sins on that old rugged cross. I pray that they would abide in the love of God, taking in the sweetness of knowing him and being completely known by him.

Time is fleeting. Remember those pictures? How young we were, how young I was...How I pray that God would bless these days, weeks and months ahead for my sons, for all our kids, as they learn and grow into the men and women that God is building them into. 

These are the intangibles I want to look back on and remember seeing and experiencing my boys grow into and embrace for lives dedicated to the service of their God and fellow man.
