For some, these past few weeks have seen a job loss. Others have seen their health take a drastic turn or the security that they once had. Others have lost joy and happiness; their hope has dissipated and they feel empty. While others have lost loved ones. People that made their lives twinkle and gleam with their unique expression of Jesus’ love. Loss comes in many shapes and sizes and degrees. It comes in waves or is simple and sudden. What is true is that loss comes upon us all. Regardless of where you find yourselves on the spectrum of wealth, health or success, loss will come. Not one person is immune, there is no pill or shot that can halt its coming or its devastating effects in our lives. What is also true is there is a remedy for loss. It’s perfect companionship. It looks like abiding in the wonder and awe of the God who created you and I, really reveling in relationship with him. It’s a remedy, not a cure. See, he doesn’t take the loss away or make the booboo better. But he does carry the pain and hardship for you, he passes on his rest and grace to shape a new life of walking so very close to him. Slowly, as you begin passing him your loss – the grief, the sorrow, the pain, the agony of it all, he responds in shaping your image of him, the world that you live in and the eternity that lies before you. He opens your eyes to see the answer to every question comes back to his great love and his desire for us all to experience it. He opens our hearts to experience an eternity now in him that lasts forever – that’s what eternity is…it’s forever. A forever with him, living out what perfect life is in relationship with him. In the eternal, the temporal losses of today seem microscopic – they still hurt. There is still pain and hardship, and we still ask the question why. But there is perspective now, and that gives us hope. In that same eternal, the losses that feel like they may be eternal and still seem insurmountable find the creator God who is greater than those losses take their weight from our shoulders and carry them for us. We find rest for our souls. We still hurt, the pain and hardship still there, but now there is remedy. Now there is healing. Now the eternal seems to shape our understanding of our loss in a different way – now we see that even when that loss is someone else’s slumber as the bible calls death, we need not fear. Even that loss, when we reach for Jesus, is only for a time. Then an eternity is there before us – but this time there is no loss – just awe and glory and wonder filled visions of a God that brings everything into holy perspective. A perspective that we can live in with his direction and guidance. Rest in his goodness and grace. Even in times of loss – especially in times of loss. Knowing he will bring you through, just pass him the hurt and grief, the sorrow and sadness. He will make you lie down in green pastures – he will restore your soul. Even as we experience loss, we can know that through Jesus we can, and will be made whole. I’m praying, wherever you are in this process, you are passing those burdens to him, that he is shaping your vision and perspective to experience an eternal joy that comes only through walking closely with him. For his glory and your good.
