If you have grown up like so many people that I meet, the Advent season is not a known commodity. In fact you may think that the title of this blog is click bait, it isn't. When it comes to Advent it is all about getting ready. Advent is about preparation for a time that we take at commercial face value - Christmas.

For so many people Christmas is about Santa Claus, Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. If you are religious you may think of Christmas a bit deeper as the day Jesus was born, even for those that know Jesus, there is a temptation to just think of the Christmas season as a time to remember that for a moment God came in human form and dwelt among us but only as a reason to point to Easter. Advent takes us deeper still to the heart of God. Beyond all the Christmas presents, tinsel and nativity scenes with wisemen.

I grew up with Advent but I didn't really get it until just recently.

I didn't understand the implications of what the whole thing meant to me.

I am going to be posting on Advent in preparation for a celebration of Christ's coming to dwell among us not only for a moment but for all time. A celebration of Jesus taking on flesh and yes looking forward to the season of Easter but dwelling in the now - an awe inspiring now that should make all of us scratch our heads.

The Advent season prepares us for the creator of the universe, the designer of time and space, the manager of the universe, the director of the cosmos coming to a lowly hole in the wall stable, to an outcast virgin and her carpenter husband. All to revolutionize the relationship that He has with you and me and every other person that walks on this earth from the beginning of time until its end.

Preparation for Advent isn't like setting out the fine china and getting on your best suit or dress for the Queen of England (although you would). It isn't like planning for that first date with that special person (which you should still do). And it isn't like the feeling of 'nesting' when that first baby is expected any week now. It's being prepared for the comings of Jesus. The Christ-child and the Triumphant King of kings.

Are you ready for this? It's coming. Advent is here. Are you ready?
