Today was track and field at my sons school and my wife and I spend the day cheering them on and encouraging them and their schoolmates. In the earlier part of the day I watched a boy fall in an 800 meter dash. It was a rough fall and the pain was visible on his face and legs. With tears streaming down his face he paused laying sprawled out on the track.

What was astonishing to me was his perseverance in the face of pain and loss. He pulled himself up, ran his race and finished. His parents should be proud of the strength and perseverance of his character.

As I watched this boy fall but finish his race I couldn't help think of many of the young men that I have journeyed with over the years. Men that have seen their lives shaped through persevering through the pain of life, through loss and fear. Life is littered with these moments of necessary perseverance. But we all have opportunities to fall and not get up. We can each lie in loathing pain and agony on the track of life and refuse to live up to the expectation of Christ's call to endure until the end.

Perhaps it sounds strange, but I want to be like that 11 year old boy. I want to have the courage to get up and keep running my race when I fall and I need to be that man the Jesus has called me to be, to persevere to the end and live a life of character and integrity.
