Sitting. Waiting.

Wondering when the lecture will be over. That one teacher, you know the one. Monotone voice. Distant glare, hands in his pockets...playing with his keys.

A wonderful man. Probably good content…but I’m not “into it”.

Time passes. The course ends…the degree is over.

That one teacher, with the knowledge, the wisdom and experience. I missed it all. And I realize now, they were moments I can’t get back.

We all have moments we can’t get back.

Whether they are lost moments with our kids or spouse, moments of learning or growth, opportunities to bless others or share a word of encouragement, they are lost to you. It's a loss that is forever. Those moments don't come back. And what is most painful, we all have more than a single instance of a lost moment.

There are ways of dealing with lost moments. These moments that won't come back. The reality is, most of us deal with the loss through regret - this pattern of guilt and shame that robs us of our joy and peace.

Each one of us know regret. That simple way of allowing the past to resurface and then the blame, the shame game, the guilt of the loss. More than pain of the loss, is the unfettered time that is thrown away in the regret, more lost moments. More pain and hurt. More moments we simply can't get back.

No. Regret is not the answer. The confusing reality, there is another way, a better process to journey through the loss. That's right, there is no stepping around it, no getting over it. Loss of moments is experienced and grieved in the same way as any other loss. We journey through it.

We begin by recognizing it for what it is. Regret blames and beats down. Regret makes you think that the time can be redeemed, you can redeem it. Regret puts that pressure on you to make it better - the guilt and shame evidence this expectation. But it isn't through regret that we move through it - it isn't the blame game. It's recognizing it for what it is - loss.

Recognition seems so mundane and useless. We want to do something to make it right. We want to build or teardown, but that only compounds the problem when we haven't simply recognized the reality of what the loss is - moments that won't come back.

With recognition we can move to that one thing that permits the very peace we need to inhabit us, release.

Release isn't a feeling or statement. It doesn't happen overnight. It's a process of handing over - of moving through the pain of loss. The lost moments that will never come back.

What release doesn't do is give those moments back, but in releasing them to the one who can restore and make right all things, he redeems them.

It is one of those hard things to understand, this idea that when we release our loss to Him, He doesn't change the past, but He redeems the future,

> ***"If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it."***

He does this when we release, when we give everything of ourselves, even our loss, especially our loss, and follow after Him.

It is an incredible thing when we fully release ourselves into His care, into the hands of our creator and allow him to put the pieces back together. Pieces that have fallen apart, the loss and the brokenness. He restores, He redeems.

Redemption doesn't look like a redo, it look likes a gift of newness. It is something we are ever prepared for, because we have given Him everything in Hope of what He has already given us, life. But He gives more. He redeems our future.

He makes all things new. A rebirth, reshapes into the newness of what David called, ***"A New Heart"*** (Psalm 51), and what Nicodemus couldn't understand in his conversation in the darkness of night with his saviour, of being ***"born again..born of the Spirit"*** (John 3:3, 8).

It is what Jesus said he was all about in front of a home crowd in Nazareth when he read from the scrolls of Isaiah:

> ***"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour...today as you listen, this scripture has been fulfilled."***

This moment won't be back, but your Father in heaven has set a plan in motion that will redeem your present and your future, to set free the oppressed...you and me and a world lost in their losses and past.

He releases the captives, you and me, from our self-made prisons. Prisons made from those moments in our lives we will never get back, and He redeems each element of our losses when we truly trust Him to do the work.

What elements of your past, of the grief and brokenness are you still hanging on to? What moments of guilt and shame are lingering in your heart that you have yet to recognize and release to God? What is holding you back?

Run to the one who loves you, who recognizes who you are and the joy found in who you have been created to be. The one who has saved you for the now and the future. Run to Him.
