That is the way adventures - or even simple journey's all begin. My own adventure today led me to step into a small independent bookstore and peruse the shelves. There is never a bookstore - large or small, new or used, that I don't first judge by whether or not they carry at least one of Tolkien's works. This afternoon I found several. I picked up The Hobbit and was reminded of Bilbo's exclamation, "I'm going on an adventure!", followed in quick succession by his statement to Frodo in the The Fellowship of the Ring, "it's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your front door...". That first step is always the most precarious, always the most fearful. It is the step that loses you sleep and at the same time subjects your waking hours to day dreams that often never come true. I walked out of that adorable little bookstore and down to an independent coffee shop (where I am writing this right now). You know the kind. The eclectic cafe playing uniquely 90's American rock and serves a CanadianO (rather than an Americano). Seating is comfortable and the service is outstanding. The coffee, as it brews, fills the whole room and emboldens you to sit, rest and take a moment to reflect. at least that is what happens when I stare into a coffee cup and take enough time to smell the steam wrestling off the hot liquid joy. The laptop opens and my fingers dance on the keyboard as I think to myself, > **"you've gotta start somewhere..."** No one wants to begin, certainly we don't like beginning again... In reality, that has been the rhythm of my life, beginning and then beginning again. If it wasn't hard enough the first time, the second time that you shake off the rust, blow off the dust, and get moving again, just seems impossible. You've got to start somewhere. It's where I'm starting. It's the process I am taking and the joy of the adventure that I remarkably revel in. Most importantly it's the faith that has been brewing that ever reminds me of the wisdom found in that well-known Proverb: > ***"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your paths."*** The truth...I've never really had a big, grandiose plan. A plan to lead, a plan to parent, a plan for dinner. I hear the call and I run to it. I certainly have never had a plan to write. The fear of putting words to my thoughts and seeing them come alive on a piece of paper or a blank screen to be read by others is real. If you're still here, you can likely agree. Putting your thoughts, ideas, your being and doing before others is at best unsettling, and at worst, debilitating. When we recognize that the adventure, this journey that we are on as we just get started, walking out that door, is dangerous, we also take in the experience of that brewing faith and growing trust in a God that does the impossible, and it's beyond our wildest imagination. Trusting in Him, walking out that door can be riddled with the discomfort and fear of the unknown, but know and live into the truth that the first step you take is not one that you experience alone. The very God of creation that you trust steps out ***with*** you. He told one of his Old Testament leaders, Joshua, to be courageous. He encouraged him to take the steps that would lead him into his future: > ***"Be strong and very courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."*** In the same way we are called to take up our call in courage and a brewed faith. Whatever it is that you are being led into, starting or starting again. Whether it is parenting, work, a new relationship, or a new kingdom experience, even putting words to paper, He is with you. Step out the door. Start now with that first or that first-again step. You've gotta start somewhere!
